The Advanced Certificate requires substantial wine knowledge and is the appropriate course for those who have successfully completed the Intermediate Certificate or who already possess a broad foundation of wine knowledge — including wine labeling laws, appellation systems, major wine-producing regions, and grape types — and are experienced in tasting technique.

The course covers the major wine regions of the world in more depth than the Intermediate Certificate, and includes more detailed study of viticulture and vinification. This course enables students to describe the characteristics of the principal wines and spirits of the world and to explain the key factors influencing those characteristics.

In the last session of this course, students take a 2-hour examination comprised of multiple-choice questions, short-answer/essay questions, and a blind tasting of one wine. Students who successfully complete this exam are awarded the WSET Advanced Certificate in Wine and Spirits.

Course tuition includes approximately 38 hours of course instruction, course textbook, study guide, exam review materials, additional handouts, tastings of approximately 90 wines/spirits, and approximately 2 vineyard/winery trips.

This course is extremely challenging, even for those who have taken numerous other wine courses, or who have a strong background in wine. Extensive outside reading and course assignments are required.

The Advanced Certificate is a prerequisite for the WSET Diploma Course.
